A healthy relationship with technology begins with something more basic than screen-time limits: knowing who is directing your attention.
A child can learn to unlock a tablet, swipe through videos, and ask an AI a question long before they understand what attention is.
That difference matters.
We have become very good at teaching people how to operate technology. We are much less deliberate about teaching them how to live with it.
A young person may know how to search Google, edit a video, join a group chat, install an app, and use an AI assistant. We call that digital literacy. But these are mostly operational skills. They tell you how to use the machine.
They do not tell you when to use it, why you reached for it, what it is replacing, or when to put it down.
That may turn out to be the more important literacy.
In a recent TED conversation, digital-wellness entrepreneur Larissa May used a phrase that stayed with me: young people should believe they “have a right to their mind.”
It sounds almost dramatic until you consider how strange the alternative is.
If we do not learn to decide what deserves our attention, other systems will make that decision for us.
Screen time is a crude measurement
Much of the debate around children and technology has revolved around one number: hours.
How many hours a day should a child spend on a screen?
It is an understandable question. It is also becoming an increasingly incomplete one.
The American Academy of Pediatrics now advises families to consider the quality and context of digital media use rather than treating all screen minutes as equivalent. Its guidance points out that digital media can mean very different things: schoolwork, talking to relatives, gaming, social media, creative work, entertainment, or learning a new skill. The effect depends partly on what is happening on the screen, why the child is there, and what the activity is displacing.
Thirty minutes spent making something with a friend and thirty minutes spent drifting through an algorithmic feed occupy the same amount of time.
They are not the same experience.
The research itself is more complicated than many headlines suggest. A 2024 review in Nature Reviews Psychology noted that research connecting social media use with adolescent mental health has produced mixed and inconsistent findings. The interesting questions increasingly concern mechanisms: which people, which platforms, which behaviors, which content, and under which circumstances.
This does not mean that excessive or compulsive use is harmless. Screens can crowd out sleep, exercise, face-to-face interaction, reading, play, and other things children need. Younger children present their own developmental concerns.
But “screen time” alone cannot tell us whether technology is serving a person or slowly organizing that person’s life.
For that, we need another question:
Who decided what this moment was for?
That question changes the whole conversation.
If I open a computer because I want to write something, I chose the purpose before the device entered the picture.
If I open my phone without knowing why, see a notification, move to another app, follow a recommended video, then another, and emerge forty minutes later somewhere I never intended to be, the sequence has been directed largely from outside me.
The device was the same.
The relationship was different.
A ban can protect attention. It cannot teach attention.
Schools have started responding to the problem with increasingly strict phone rules.
There are good reasons for this.
In 2025, 77 percent of U.S. public schools reported policies prohibiting students from using cellphones during class. School leaders widely reported concerns about attention, mental health, and academic performance.
Early evidence suggests that restrictions can produce real benefits.
A 2025 NBER working paper studying a large Florida school district found that cellphone bans were followed by improved test scores in the second year and fewer unexcused absences. There was also an important cost during the transition: suspensions rose significantly at first, especially among Black students, before disciplinary effects began to fade.
So phone-free environments may be valuable.
But there is a distinction worth preserving.
A rule can remove a phone from a classroom.
It cannot teach a teenager what to do with boredom.
It cannot teach someone to notice the emotional impulse that makes them reach for a screen.
It cannot teach them to recognize the difference between looking for information and escaping from discomfort.
And it cannot follow them home.
Environmental restrictions can create space in which attention becomes possible again. Education has to do something different: help a person learn what to do with that attention once it has been returned.
This is why I find the language of agency more useful than the language of abstinence.
The goal cannot be to raise children who behave well only when the device has been taken away.
The stronger goal is to raise people capable of holding a powerful device in their hands without automatically surrendering the direction of their minds to it.
Digital literacy should begin before the search box
AI makes this problem more interesting.
For most of internet history, digital technology competed for our attention primarily by offering things to consume.
AI can now do something more intimate: it can think alongside us.
That is enormously useful.
It also creates a new temptation.
Before AI, a student facing a difficult question might search for information. Now the student can skip a step and ask a machine to produce the answer itself.
Sometimes that is exactly what we want.
But if it becomes the default response to uncertainty, we risk losing something that no parental-control app can measure: the moment when a person sits with a question long enough to form a thought.
Perhaps one of the simplest digital habits of the AI era should therefore happen before touching the device.
What do I think?
What am I trying to find out?
Can I explain the problem before asking the machine to explain it to me?
Then use the technology.
The sequence matters.
A child who invents a story and asks AI to help illustrate it is using many of the same computational systems as a child passively consuming an endless stream of generated videos. Yet one begins with an intention originating in the child.
That is a very different habit of mind.
Creation is not magically healthy, of course. People can compulsively create, perform, post, optimize, and chase feedback just as easily as they can compulsively consume.
The deeper distinction is whether technology enters after a purpose has formed or whether the technology supplies the purpose.
One begins with the person.
The other begins with the platform.
The disappearing pause
There is a small human experience that smartphones have made surprisingly easy to eliminate.
The empty moment.
Waiting for an elevator.
Sitting in a car.
Standing in line.
Finishing lunch before everyone else.
Lying in bed before sleep.
Walking somewhere alone.
These moments once contained almost nothing. Now they contain the entire internet.
That sounds like progress. Sometimes it is.
But a mind that never encounters an unfilled moment never has much reason to discover what it might do with one.
It does not have to remember something, observe the room, invent a game, wonder about a problem, notice an emotion, start a conversation, doodle on paper, or simply experience boredom until the boredom changes into something else.
Every small discomfort can be replaced before it develops.
This is where analog life becomes more than nostalgia.
A notebook beside a computer, a book in a bag, a walk without a phone, cooking, drawing, building something, talking without a second screen nearby: none of these activities is special because it is old-fashioned.
Their value is that they restore situations in which the mind must generate some of its own content.
Even attempts at “digital detox” appear to work better as reduction and restructuring than as fantasies of permanent abstinence. A 2024 review in Pediatrics found limited evidence overall, but interventions reducing social-media or smartphone use showed more promising effects on well-being than complete abstinence.
We do not need to escape technology.
We need to preserve places where technology does not automatically arrive first.
That includes adults.
Children learn the meaning of a phone long before anyone explains it to them. They watch what adults do when conversation slows down. They watch what happens during dinner, in the car, while waiting, after waking up, and before going to sleep.
If every pause produces a screen, that is a lesson.
If attention can remain with another person even while a phone is nearby, that is also a lesson.
The most useful family technology rules may therefore be the ones adults can obey too.
Not because parents need to perform some impossible version of digital purity, but because a child cannot easily learn that attention is valuable while watching every adult donate theirs at the first opportunity.
There will be more technology, not less.
AI will become more capable. Interfaces will become easier. Devices may become less visible as they move into glasses, cars, appliances, rooms, and perhaps eventually far more intimate forms of computing.
The old strategy of identifying “screen time” will become increasingly strange when the screen itself is no longer the important part.
What will remain is the question underneath it.
Who decides where the mind goes next?
That may be the digital skill worth teaching first.
Before prompting.
Before searching.
Before scrolling.
Before the machine becomes useful enough that we forget there was ever a moment when we had to decide for ourselves.
